Sasha Sloan’s New Disquiet “Lie”

August 7th marked a new era for Sasha Sloan when the artist released her new lead single “Lie” from her upcoming debut album Only Child. The broodingly charismatic singer-songwriter changed her visual aesthetic on her socials accompanied by a one-liner “I was sad before it was cool.” The album will be released this fall, following the three EP’s which permanently marked her space in the industry as “sad girl sloan", and resulted in high praise for her lyricism.

Diving into her latest release “Lie”, Sloan has captured and an even more complex form of loneliness on this record; loneliness beside a lover. Begging her partner to lie, the song takes the perspective of someone searching desperately for a sign the relationship will survive, pleading “Don’t be honest/ Promise me that you want this.” Speaking directly to her lover, a sense of carelessness is offered in wanting them to lie simply because it would be easier than heartbreak. Her verses echo “Please just fake it/ Pretend to look when I’m naked” with a soft-spoken underlying pain pertinent to songs Sloan has released in the past. Her EP Loser released in 2018, offers the same self-reflective complexity on songs such as “Faking It”, where she explains “It’s like I’m standing at the bottom of a hole/ With a shovel in my hand.”

Apart from lyrics, the songs melodic elements are actually much more upbeat and bright. Partnered with Sloan’s close vocals, the song feels as though there is a shiny gloss painted around her production. This is illustrated by slow instrumentation swells, and vocal echoes like ripples on water from a single drop of rain. A teardrop may even be more appropriate, rippled on her somber background harmonies and complimenting the song's intimacy. The chorus’s rhythm is even danceable, in a lonely rollerblading under your disco-ball with the lights dimmed sort of way, as Sloan exclaims “Can we just dance ’til the sky’s awake?/ ‘Cause I really can’t get my heart broken tonight.”

Sasha Sloan plans to release her debut album Only Child sometime in autumn. Calling herself a jaded romantic, she explained in a short video clip for her fans on Twitter that “every song on this album represents a different part of who I am.” While a date hasn’t been released, fans are overwhelmingly excited for this first proper album from Sasha Sloan.
