In this new glossy single with excellent production and a catchy rhythm, Ariana explores the idea of being a multi-faceted President of the United States. She is depicted leading the country and holding cabinet meetings while also cooking and walking her dogs. This new single's production team comprises of London On Da Track, with long-term Grande collaborators Mr. Franks and Tommy Brown.

The video features the pop star having company by a team comprised by different races and mostly women, including Grande’s mother Joan and long-time collaborator Victoria Monét; it is depicted as a re-imagination of the predominantly male and white world that is US politics. The purpose can be seen much clearer when taking into account that the video dropped just hours after the final Presidential debate of the 2020 election.

In the musical aspect, "Positions" is a mid-tempo, light, and breezy, short track. It is not overly complicated but with simple additions such as acoustic guitars, plucky strings, trap drums, and the barely audible sound of crickets chirping. The lyrics work as a reminder of how the dual interpretation of an unassuming pop tune can further its depth through the exploration of themes when visuals are shown: “Switchin’ my positions for you/Cookin’ in the kitchen and I’m in the bedroom.” The thought put into this composition can be noticed and it's expanded through the video, directed by her frequent collaborator, Dave Meyers.

"Positions" also serves to raise the question as to why the job of the president also falls to middle-age men; it is a bold move by Grande and her producers. Nevertheless, it will surely help this single blitz through the charts as it is proving as you read this article. Her new single is everything we expected, and Grande keeps occupying an icon-worthy space in pop culture right now.
