How is the pandemic affecting this year's parade?
This year's Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade had to re-invent itself because of the pandemic that's affecting millions and lot's of people around the United States. This year's parade drops spectators and young participants because it had adjusted to COVID limitations. Musical performances, balloons, floats, and a Santa Claus finale were still in place, but only television audiences were able to watch the show. Familiar balloon faces could be seen, including Snoopy, Ronald McDonald, and SpongeBob SquarePants. The camera was in front of the Macy's Herald Square flagship store on the 34th street in New York City. As always, the Thanksgiving Parade and its hosts, Savannah Guthrie, Hoda Kotb, and Al Roker of NBC's "Today Show," aired on NBC at 9 am EST time. Jimmy Fallon and The Roots opened the show. Even with the pandemic protocols were undertaken and the fact the parade took place made it a rare festivity in a major city that would, in this time, see most of its events canceled.
Performers for this year's parade included Lauren Alaina, Tori Kelly, Patti LaBelle, Dolly Parton, Ally Brooke, Pentatonix, Bebe Rexha, CNCO, AJR, and Jordin Sparks as musical performances. Highlights from the performers at the parade included: Dolly Parton, a country icon who partnered with Cracker Barrel to perform her rendition of "A Holly Jolly Christmas." The casts of different award-worthy musicals turned the parade to perform their hit songs that included some from Lin-Manuel Miranda's Hamilton, Tina Fey's Mean Girls, and Alanis Morissette's Jagged Little Pill. Keke Palmer performed her RandB/Soul song "Dreamcatcher," and Sofia Carson performed her pop song, "Guess I'm a Liar."
