This past weekend Orlando brought together the city’s music industry for a few days of networking and learning. With management, labels and other music business professionals the WorldScout Expo offered many rising stars a chance to get their music heard by the gatekeepers of the music industry. I volunteered my time working with the media team and just wanted to share my thoughts for the few hours I got to work.
First off, the conference was held at the beautiful Wyndham Resort in Orlando, FL which was a perfect choice for the speakers and the guests. The resort had a spacious ballroom where the speakers were introduced and vendors could set up. The day I was there, the founder, Cindy Cooper, and the main host, Al Jones, welcomed all the panel speakers, which as I stated were people from very prestigious companies like QC Records and Capitol Records.
From there everyone was allowed to go attend the individual panels and most of the other panelists went to go judge the talent auditions. I attended some panels, and Kacie Anderson of KKA presented one of the most interesting panels. Kacie is a veteran artist manager and currently works as a brand and artist manager. Her panel was very interesting because she talked about contacting brands and not trying to seem pushy from the get-go. She emphasized being friendly and not always wanting something from these companies. It could be a simple update on what her artists are up to or congratulating the company on any recent successes.
This keeps her and the artists she represents in the brand’s mind when they are looking for an after partying performer or even a headline performer. It was a great presentation and I learned a lot from the few minutes I got to spend in her panel.
Now the more exciting part was watching the auditions. I was tasked with capturing a few of the talent and getting the judge’s reactions. It was interesting to see how many people not only made music but also had hands in the whole production of some of the songs. Some auditions didn’t even include a full song but just the beat and judges loved it. I commend every person who came up and performed for the auditions. I could only imagine how nervous someone could’ve been having industry people making a decision about someone in only a few minutes. Overall I enjoyed the audition part and I wish they had a list of all the artists so I could go back and find the ones I really enjoyed.
While I didn’t get a chance to experience the full 3 day WorldScout Expo, my time there was very enjoyable. Everyone respected the media team very well and I never had a problem getting in and out of panels and auditions. Every guest had my respect because I know they were paying to be there and the expo, in my opinion, was worth every penny. I’m glad I got to get some nuggets of industry knowledge from the panelists and I hope WorldScout Expo returns to Orlando for an even bigger crowd in the near future.
