#WhoDatWenesdays: Derek Lersch!

During June 16, 2022, at the Full Sail Live Venue, 3300+ Climbing had the opportunity to have a small talk with Full Sail University graduate and now Country Singer, Derek Lersch. Along with his band, they grant Full Sail Live an amazing time filled with dance, music, and a wonderful voice. It was perceived how Derek loves what he does, and the passion that his voice brings to the music. We talked about a variety of things, from his music and career to his years being a 3300+ Climbing member.

After an incredible performance, we had the opportunity to share our time with Derek Lersch. It was an incredible experience where we got to know how he creates his music and how the 3300+ Climbing Club changed his career. During the show, he sang beautiful songs such as Girl Dad, Miss Me Whiskey, and My Baby Summertime which are all written by him. He also covered iconic songs like Summer of the 69, Pour Some Sugar on Me and Sweet Caroline. At the end of the day, Derek Lersch makes sure to own the stage.

During our small talk we got to learn a little bit about who he is and what is coming next in his career:

What made you choose to go into country music?

Derek expressed- “I grew up on a lot of classic rock, and rock has changed a lot over the years, a lot of country has kind of become rock. I have always loved the songwriting and storytelling in the country, and always thought that was the best avenue for me. Songwriting is important, and not that it isn't important in rock, but in country music it's a big thing.”

There is no doubt that Derek Lersch will take country music to the top. Now songwriting is a talent that people like Derek possess, but how does he do it?

Derek expressed – “It's a mix! I love it when I have a title, I have a notes list just full of titles, and when something jumps up at me - I'm working on one right now called "Moments" - I had the title in my head but I don't really have the music for it. I heard a track and boom! That's it, that's the song. It's really cool! It's normally the song title, then the lyrics and the storytelling come through that.”

There you have it folks, the secret to songwriting. This experience can be seen in his single Girl Dad. It is a song inspired and dedicated to his daughter and to all the Girl Dads out there. Without a doubt is an amazing song.

During his career, Derek has had the chance to work with other artists. We know that making a career in the Entertainment Industry is not easy, but is not impossible either. We just need the correct people to lend us hand or a piece of advice, and for us it was Derek.

What is the best advice that someone else has given you?

Derek expressed- “Be flexible - even today, things are never going to run the way you want them to. If you ask my band, I am very much a perfectionist, but in the music business it doesn't work that way. You gotta learn to roll with the punches, be flexible, don't be a jerk. It's not going to get you anywhere. Just understand that those people are working hard too, everyone around you is trying to reach the same goal of success. I had someone tell me earlier to "be flexible," and they are always in my ear telling me to relax, you're doing ok, go with the flow! So I take a deep breath and say "ok." Whether you are on the business side of things, working with an artist, certain artists can be divas and be jerks sometimes. You just have to learn to roll with it. Whether you are in the industry or a musician, you just have to be flexible. You have to remember that it is fun. It is work, but at the end of the day, you are having fun. If you aren't having fun out there, the crowd can tell.”

This is very important. We work in an industry that the goal is to grant fun, so to achieve that, we also need to have fun while creating content for the public. Derek is a great example of this. He brings an outstanding energy to the stage and grants a phenomenal time to the public.

Interesting fact! Derek Lersch was a former 3300+ Climbing member. Derek had many great things to talk about the club, and we have no doubt that he had the best experience working in the club. After all, he was one of the students that gave life to what we know now as 3300+ Climbing. So, how was being a part of 3300+ impacted his career and his life?

Derek expressed- “It's taught me quite a lot, because what you do for the artist with 3300+, how it all works, it taught me not only what I can do for myself as a musician, but also how to work with a team. That was honestly the best part of working with 3300+Climbing, you get to work and collaborate with a million different people from different departments on different things with different ideas. Being able to take that, listen to everyone's ideas and try new things, a lot of cool stuff came out of it. I was lucky enough to be in that early phase to watch it grow and develop into what it is now. It's really cool to see everything that has been accomplished with it, and some really special people have come through it. It was key learning how to work with others, no matter if you want to or not, you have to! Team work makes the dream work!”

Until this day, it feels like a dream talking to such amazing person. His band and him, gave us a lovely welcoming and an amazing opportunity to talk to him. We couldn’t be more grateful that he grants us his time to talk to us. Derek has many plans for his career and is in no way of stopping anytime soon. He has a song in the making, and a baby as well! Congratulations to him! He will also perform in a few parts of Florida, such as Tampa, and we can’t wait to see him having an amazing time doing what he loves.
