July brought the announcement of one of the world’s leading music conglomerates, Universal Music Group, expanding into Vietnam. Back in 2019, the original announcement was made at Music Matters in Singapore by Adam Granite, the EVP, Market Development of Universal Music Group, and Calvin Wong, the CEO of Universal Music Southeast Asia & Senior Vice President Asia. Over the past two months, UMV has begun to grow a roster ready to provide Vietnam’s 95 million people with hits!
Universal Music Group has always been a force and within this past year, we have seen them expand their hold internationally. The original 2019 announcement was made around the same time Def Jam launched in Southeast Asia. Heading UMV is general manager Lan Khánh Phùng and the launch came with the signing of a huge artist. First on the UMV roster is Vietnamese Pop Star Phùng Khánh Linh, who has signed to the label in partnership with Time Records, a local independent label.
Signing Linh as the first artist to the label was a powerful move for both Time Records and UMV, as she was featured on the 2015 season of The Voice Vietnam and her 2018 single "Hôm Nay Tôi Buồn" garnered over 250 million streams! Universal is a force to be reckoned with and within the past two months, they have continued their international expansion by launching their DSP, Spinnup in Japan, and INgrooves in Turkey!
