As the coronavirus continues to greatly impact our world, more and more music industry professionals are facing a frightening and uncertain future. Tours and festivals are being canceled or postponed, studio sessions are canceling, and all business travels are required to be called off.
On Tuesday, March 17th, the Recording Academy and the MusiCares Foundation announced their $2 million funds to support music professionals affected by the COVID-19 crisis. This includes those who are infected and need treatment to those canceling shows, losing jobs, and are struggling to make ends meet with their financial burdens.
The music industry is truly taking a hit. Not only musicians are being affected – but all of the workers surrounding them as well. Thousands of shows have been canceled, which means an unsettling amount of jobs lost. Music heals the soul and the world cannot let the industry, that impacts so many lives, fall to the ground.
“The music industry is built on the work of musicians, artists, and music professionals. It is in times like these, that the industry needs to come together to support those who are struggling, particularly those who rely on touring incomes to survive. We know this fund will need to be significant. We will not be able to do it alone, and that’s why we are asking the entire music community including labels, streaming services, and anyone who is able to join us in this important effort. We’re all in when the good times roll, and it’s important that we’re all in when times are tough, too.” - Steve Boom, MusiCares Chair
Many professionals in the industry and all Recording Academy Chapters are coming together within their communities to continue fundraising. If you wish to support MusiCares efforts to assist music professionals in need, click here.
