The 20 Most Legendary Spanish-Speaking Singers Part 1

This list contains some of the most legendary and amazing singers in the Spanish language singers. However, it includes many of the singers that today's pop stars look up to. Spanish language music has always had a diversity of sound due to the different cultural influences that each Spanish-speaking country has. The great thing about is that each singer's cultural diversity and musical influences are what make a beautiful jewel in the overall treasury of Spanish language music. However, it is so hard to say which is the best, so we decided to leave the numbers out.


Pedro Infante


Pedro Infante (November 18, 1917- April 15, 1957) was a Mexican singer and actor from the Golden Age of Mexican cinema who is considered to be one of the best singers of the Ranchera genre. He was also a very talented musician who played classical guitar, piano, violin, trumpet, and drums. However, on April 15, 1957 tragedy struck when a plane that Infante was co-piloting crashed. Pedro Infante was only 39 years old, but out of that tragedy came a beautiful legacy that still flourishes to this day.


Celia Cruz


Celia Cruz (October 21, 1925 - July 16, 2003) was one of the most successful Latin artists of the 20th century, especially in the Salsa and Guaracha genres. As the "Queen of Salsa" and the "Queen of Latin Music," she contributed to the popularity and rise of Latin music and artists throughout the U.S. One of the things that made her memorable was her ultra happy personality and her catchphrase "Azúcar," meaning sugar. She was also the one who helped many Latin artists get their start in the music business.


Carlos Gardel


Carlos Gardel (December 11, 1890 - June 24, 1935) was a singer, songwriter, composer, and actor who can also be described as the face of Tango music. He and lyricist Alfredo Le Pera were the ones that wrote several classic tango songs that still are featured in many films. The most popular being "Por Una Cabeza" which has appeared in Scent of a Woman. He is also a figure of controversy because three nations, Uruguay, Argentina, and France, fight over where he was born. Given his prestige, they all claim that he was born in their country. However, that doesn't matter because he gave the Spanish language the gift of his songs. Both Gardel and Le Pera died in a plane crash in Medellín, Colombia, which was a sad day for Tango music.


Lola Flores


Lola Flores (January 21, 1923 - May 16, 1995) was a Spanish singer, dancer, actress, and businesswoman who was known as "La Faraona," the Pharaoh in Spanish, due to her charisma and personality. She was 1/4 Gitana aka Gypsy (in Spain, the Gypsies prefer to be called Gypsies) not that it made a difference due to her dedication to the art form of Flamenco. In many ways, Lola Flores was the Michael Jackson of Flamenco music due to her singing and dancing ability, as well as her vision on how to expand it. She inspired many generations of artists and it was said that Lola Flores wasn't just a person, but a religion.


Rocio Dúrcal


Rocio Dúrcal (October 4, 1944 - March 25, 2005) was a Spanish singer and actress who had the most success in Mexico singing Rancheras to the point that she was known as "Queen of Rancheras." She began her career as a teen actress and became a singer. She found true success when she began singing Rancheras, most of which were composed by Juan Gabriel. She was called "La Española Más Mexicana," meaning the most Mexican Spaniard, and it shows how much Mexico loves her.


Tito Puente


Tito Puente (April 20, 1923 - June 1, 2000) was a Puerto Rican-American singer who was known as "The Musical Pope," "The King of the Timbales," and "The King of Latin Music." His contribution to Latin Music, such as popularizing Cha Cha Chá, Boogaloo, Salsa, Mambo, Latin Jazz, and Afro-Cuban Jazz, was one that continues to affect Latin Music to this day.


Camarón de la Isla


Camarón de la Isla (December 5, 1950 - July 2, 1992) was a Spanish Gypsy Flamenco singer who was known for his collaborations with Paco de Lucía and Tomatito. He played a major part in the Flamenco Revival with his songs and how he performed them with such feeling. He has also had the most effect on young Flamenco singers in Spain with many of them calling him one of their biggest influences. Fun fact, his real name was José Monje Cruz and his stage name actually means "shrimp of the island."


Sandro de America


Sandro de América (August 19, 1945 - January 4, 2010) was an Argentine singer and actor of Gypsy-Romani descent, who was considered to be the Argentine Elvis. Most of his songs are in the Spanish Rock genre. He also appeared a couple of times on the Ed Sullivan Show, one of the most popular television shows in the mid-20th century, with the Doors and Domenico Modugno. One thing that makes him stand out managed to be the first Latino to sell out the Felt Forum at Madison Square.


Nino Bravo


Nino Bravo (August 3, 1944 - April 16, 1973) was a Spanish singer who can be called the "Voice" due to his velvet, baritone range. His songs were poetry in motion and he always sang them with the utmost care, you could really tell that he lived the songs. Nino was also one of the earliest pioneers of music videos because he understood that it was a way to convey the true meaning of a song. Despite all of his successes as a singer, it's still hard to believe that his career only lasted four years before his tragic death in a car accident. Nino's music continues to inspire new generations of singers and he is one of those singers that really left his mark.


Camilo Sesto


Camilo Sesto (September 16, 1946 - September 8, 2019) was a Spanish singer, songwriter, music producer, and actor whose love songs earned him the name "The King of Love." Camilo was one of the first singer-songwriters in Spanish music and he wrote almost all of the songs in his repertoire. He also played Jesus in Andrew Lloyd Webber's Jesus Christ Superstar! where he showed the range of his vocals in "Getsemani." He had such an incredible range and even released an album in English, which showed that his talent appealed to a larger audience. To this day he remains one of the artists with the most number 1 hits, with 52 in total.
