Taylor Swift Directed a Mind-Blowing Music Video for 'The Man'

Taylor Swift is back at it again with a music video for The Man, her fourth single off of Lover, which was released this past August. Personally, this is my favorite song on the album and one of my all-time favorites from her as well. If you haven’t listened to The Man yet, it’s all about women’s empowerment and addressing the major issue over the double standards between men and women in our society. A huge issue that Taylor has faced her entire career is the way she gets treated in the media vs. the way famous men are treated, and she did not hold back her feelings about this in her music video.

Swift released the music video for The Man on February 27th at 7 am EST on YouTube. An exciting thing about this music video is that Taylor directed it herself!

"I loved the months of prep, meetings, location scouting, set design, mood boards, deciding every detail down to the wardrobe each actress/actor wore + working with them on set.” -Taylor on directing The Man

In the music video, Taylor gets disguised as “The Man”, where she’s a corporate titan who actually gets praised for her hard work, is welcomed by any room, and sits on a yacht yelling at waiters - surrounded by girls in bikinis. Early on in the video “The Man” goes to the bathroom on a wall at “13th Street Station,” representing Taylor's favorite number. But if you pay close attention, around the station’s sign there are the names of all of her albums, from Fearless to Reputation, following another sign “Missing: If Found Return to Taylor Swift.” This scene represents her battle with Scooter Braun on owning the rights to her music. Another thing, which I found quite amusing, is another sign in the station showing that no scooters are allowed, which is another middle finger moment from her - to Scooter Braun.

At the end of this shot, and in the corner of the photo above, there’s a poster for Swift’s Miss Americana Netflix documentary – but since Taylor is now “The Man,” for the music video, it reads Mr. Americana stars Tyler Swift. She really did not miss any details when getting her points across in the video!

If you’re someone like me who was hoping for surprise cameos throughout the video, well today is your lucky day! In one scene, “The Man,” is playing tennis and starts to get angry with the chair umpire. If you pay close attention and are a big fan of Taylor - you’ll see that the chair umpire is played by her dad, Scott Swift. Another funny cameo is at the very end of the video. “The Man” has a quick conversation with director Swift. The voice of "The Man" is very deep and not Taylor’s voice at all, so this had me in shock because I knew she was playing him, and the voice sounded pretty familiar to me. Luckily, during the credits, it’s revealed that Dwayne Johnson voiced “The Man” for Taylor!

You might be like me and didn’t give too much thought into why Taylor released this video on February 27th, but she sure did and I’m even happier to now know this. It’s actually an extremely significant anniversary for our country. On February 27th, 1922, the Supreme Court upheld the 19th Amendment, which is for the voting rights of women.

There’s so much more symbolism in this music video, but I’ll stop spoiling it and end on this note – Taylor Swift is truly a fearless leader for women. Go watch The Man music video below!!
