If you grew up in the mid-nineties, then maybe you can recall the tragic death of the young and talented Tejano Superstar, Selena Quintanilla Perez. If not, then you have probably seen the movie “Selena” starring Jennifer Lopez. Selena was a talented Mexican, American singer and was exceptionally popular and well known in the Tejano music world during the early 1990s. She spent most of her life performing alongside her brother AB Quintanilla, and sister Susie Quintanilla.
With Selena's father "Abraham Quintanilla" acting as manager, he lead the family act to stardom. Nevertheless, these dreams were cut short when Selena was tragically murdered by Yolanda Saldivar, her business associate, at the young age of 23.
The new series on Netflix is only part one of the singer’s story. The show depicts the beginning of Selena’s love for singing and fashion. It also reveals the passion she had for singing in English, but initially beginning her career in the Latin music industry.
The family goes through some challenging times and works hard for success.
Unlike the movie “Selena” the Series takes a deeper dive into the lives of her sister, Susie, and brother A. B. Shedding details of their personal struggles.
As well as exhibiting the family's determination and dedication to succeed in the music industry. It also displays Abraham Quintenialla's strong fundamental principles within the family dynamic and transmitting strong ethical morals in his children.
The first season runs nine episodes and carries us through the timeline of Selina's childhood. Where she began singing at weddings and nightclubs then leads up to Selena keeping her feelings from her future husband hidden from her family.
For the most part, the storyline is comparable to the movie. Only the series goes into detail about the family dynamic and experiences. The series captures the music scene from the 80s with throwback songs from Jody Watley, Cameo, Paula Abdul, Expose, Freeze, and many more. There is a soundtrack to the series you can check out as well. So far, there has not been a set date to when season two will run on Netflix, only that it should be released sometime in 2021.
