Lil Nas X has joined the server; the two-time Grammy winner has taken a bite of the newly developed trend of unique concerts inside gaming platforms. However, unlike other artists (such as Marshmello, Travis Scott, Diplo, and recently J Balvin), Lil Nas collaborated with the kid-friendly virtual game platform Roblox.
Roblox announced, on the morning of November 10th, a partnership with Columbia Records. This deal allowed it to bring a virtual concert experience featuring the record-breaking artist with motion-capture performance. Not only did Nas become the first artist to collaborate with Roblox, but he was also featured for four shows over two days on the weekend of November 13th.
The Event
On Friday, a preshow was available for fans to watch behind-the-scenes footage from the making of the Roblox concert. The concert venue was open for early attendants and featured limited-edition Li Nas pickups, such as a free Old Town Cowboy Hat. As the time leading up to the event got closer, more items became available for players.
Lil Nas X's new single "HOLIDAY", debuted during the special event.
The whole experience was extended during the whole weekend, with different concert showtimes. The event included a scavenger hunt, a Q&A session, and the live debut performance of his "HOLIDAY" single. Lil Nas X also performed some of his beloved hits, including "Old Town Road" and "Panini." In tandem with the special event, an exclusive merch store came featuring a capsule collection of Lil Nas accessories, emotes, and avatar bundles.
Exciting New Partners & Competitors
The global head of Music at Roblox, Jon Vlassopulos, stated they were "thrilled to partner with Columbia Records to bring Lil Nas X fans and the Roblox community together in an entirely new way." It is exciting for fans to have the chance to connect with their favorite stars through technology. These experiences create hopeful expectations of what is to come soon.
Lil Nas X is not the first artist to perform virtually on gaming platforms and will certainly not be the last. As Lil Nas X rises as a potential king of digital performers, Roblox has also emerged as a brand new competitor to Fornite in the realm of digital live shows. This will result in more and more new collaborations and events featuring fan-favorite artists to see who can claim the title, providing more creative and unique experiences for fans. What a time to be alive!
