Rise of a Drowsy Bedroom Pop Genre

Mellow psychedelic beats through the lens of a teenager’s low lighting gaze is the perfect establishing mood for the age of bedroom pop. This branch of pop music has slowly washed over the modern music industry in the past year. Looking at how the industry has changed with an emphasis on streaming rather than physical copies, you will soon find that a much more drowsy take on pop was created by angsty teenagers with persuasion from the internet. Bedroom pop is a complete soft-spoken rabbit hole leaving the listener dizzy with intrigue.

The pulses of whispery vocals and soft guitar strums are created to be almost translucent, an entire genre with unsaid instructions to be played from headphones and laptops after being recorded from strikingly similar headphones and a laptop. Over the past year, many young artists have used outlets such as YouTube to post their musical content. This slowly became widespread when artists started to become internet famous for their overnight creativity. This isolated music environment has sparked an era of young people writing, performing, and recording music directly from their drab bedroom.

The shiny new appeal of this genre is not immediate at first listen but is somehow understood after hours of late nights, neon lights, and its soft glowing beats in the background. You will then find the love for this genre to be the simple authenticity and raw sense of comfort it elicits. Lots of music today is created by algorithms and poppy-four chords, while bedroom pop is simplistically messy and compiled of all those lyrics you had originally crossed out.

This off-road genre of pop started on the internet, which is exactly where it thrives. Streaming services such as Spotify have entire playlists dedicated to the genre’s popularity, which will continue as music becomes easier to mix from your bedsheets. The more music interacts with the internet, the more intimate new sounding recordings will become as the entire music industry sulks from behind a computer screen.
