Long ago, before Netflix and streaming services took over my TV, I used to use OnDemand to watch music videos. After that came YouTube, when I would travel down the rabbit hole watching anything from old Britney Spears videos to the latest from bands like New Found Glory and Bowling for Soup. Now, Spotify looks to be the next source of music videos for those of us looking to watch the visuals that go along with the songs we love so much.
There have been previous reports of the streaming giant beginning to utilize the platform for music videos. For instance, in 2019, The Ringer announced Spotify’s vertical music videos, discussing the “Billie Eilish Experience,” which contained various video clips meant to be watched vertically on a phone or tablet (as opposed to the classic horizontal music video format). These clips were short, allowing artists to attach short looped clips to certain titles.
More recently, however, Tech Radar announced that there was a new video tab on Spotify, which leads to nothing for the time being. They summarize that Spotify will use YouTube in order to bring the videos over to the app, which might be fairly complicated.
The truth is, the addition of videos to Spotify has been a long time coming. The short clips were an exciting beginning, but whether full-length music videos will work on an audio-based streaming service remains to be seen.
