Facebook Looks to Add Music Videos to its Repertoire

When you open up the Facebook app on your phone, you might notice a few extra icons at the bottom of the loading screen. Facebook is no longer just Facebook. They own other social media platforms, like Instagram and Whatsapp, as well as a myriad of other companies. And now they’re looking to expand their reach even further. No, it’s not another acquisition. Instead, Facebook is bringing official music videos to its service, in hopes of competing with the current leading source for music videos: YouTube.

The official announcement came from Facebook back in July. The social media platform will be premiering videos from artists such as “J. Balvin, Karol G, Sebastian Yatra, Alejandro Fernandez, and Calibre 50”. It’s worth noting that this addition to Facebook has already dropped in Thailand and India, but is brand new to the United States. Facebook is partnering with some big names in this endeavor: Sony Music Group, Universal Music Group, Warner Music Group, and more. In typical Facebook fashion, it’s "go big or go home."

And if you’re wondering about the “social” aspect of the social media platform’s announcement, fear not! Just like live streams and other existing videos, users will be able to “react to, comment on, and share music videos that are important to you”. The platform also plans to personalize recommended videos for you “based on artists you follow and videos you engage with”.

As the final part of the update, Facebook has updated artist profile pages to include a way to “find and browse the official music videos of the artists you love”. TechCrunch reports that, before the official update, “supported artists were being informed that they would soon need to toggle on a new permission that would allow Facebook to automatically add their music videos to their Page… once enabled, the artists will be able to edit or remove their video posts at any time”.

So, is Facebook the future of the music video world? Or will YouTube continue to reign supreme? Only time will tell!
