Why TikTok Is The Future of The Music Industry

How did Arizona Zervas have such a meteoric rise? How did "Mood" by 24kGoldn and Iann Dior spend ten weeks atop the Billboard charts? How could an app impact a musicians' music career?

If you know the Pareto Principle, then you know that it can pretty much be applied to a ton of things in life, including the music industry. For artists, music is 80% marketing and 20% music. The biggest audience to target in music are teens and young adults, so Gen Z'ers have their say on what trends and what doesn't. It makes sense that 60% of all TikTok users are Gen Z'ers.

Roddy Rich's breakout single, "The Box", put him on the music scene. But his buzz started from TikTok. Now guess what platform "Old Town Road" blew up on? Exactly! But why is TikTok being used for music? If you think TikTok shows shades of the app Musical.ly, then you thought right. Musical.ly merged into TikTok on August 2, 2018. TikTok is constantly rising and boast a user count of 850 million. It was the most downloaded app in the first quadrant of 2019.

It can be hard to keep someone's attention in the age of distraction. Digital media has blessed some and cursed others. The good thing about Tiktok is that 90% of its users use the app daily and spend an average of 52 minutes on it. This up 12 minutes from the average of YouTube. Some call TikTok the short version of YouTube. One of the proven methods for artists on YouTube to grab the viewers' attention was through music videos, but nowadays 3-4 minutes is an eternity for younger viewers. This is where TikTok plays a key role with its 15-60 second videos, and major artists have caught on.

Producers have been called out for trying to make their beats too simple in an effort to appeal to the app. Artists have been called out for trying too hard to appeal to the TikTok audience as well. Even Justin Bieber was framed as being desperate for trying to get his single "Yummy" to go viral on the app. Yummy currently sits at half a billion streams. So... IT WORKED!

TikTok has carved out a niche in the market and is going nowhere fast. It's responsible for the success of Drake's "Tootsie Slide", 24k Golden's "Mood", and many more. Lil Nas X signed a record deal with Columbia Records just four months after posting the song "Old Town Road" on TikTok. Artists are fully aware of what TikTok can do for them. Whether you are a lesser-known artist or an A-lister just trying to stay at the top, it's best to have TikTok on your phone because it is definitely here to stay. from Fame.
