Celebrities Take to the Streets in Protest of Police Brutality and Racism

For centuries, the black community has experienced oppression at every level the system has to offer. Following the heartbreaking and public death of George Floyd, enough has now become enough. The entire world is now protesting in the names of not only George Floyd, but Breonna Taylor and the countless other victims who have lost lives at the hands of the police. We have seen several artists and record labels speaking out and making donations in aid of making a change to systemic racism and police brutality.

Let’s take a look at what some artists and labels are doing. They're not only using their platform but their pockets too!

Meek Mill has been active in bringing prison reform especially in his home town of Philidelphia. Since his release, he has been avid in bringing a much needed change to the prison system. In the wake of the protests, Meek has been consistent in using his platform to speak up about recent cases of police brutality, the protests, and even voting.

3300+Clmbing’s current artist, CreativAngel, committed many days of being in the streets radiating good vibes in an effort to bring change. Check out his Instagram feed to see him speak good energy into the people of the protests.

World renowned music conglomerate, Universal Music Group, is taking serious strides towards Social justice with the creation of a task force. Task Force for Meaningful Change will be co-chaired by Jeff Harleston and Ethiopia Habtemariam. Thirty other UMG employees will also be on the task force. Universal followed this up with a 25 million dollar fund that would be invested across six areas that Billboard reported would be “aid/charitable giving, global, internal/institutional change, legislative/public policy, partners and programming/curation” (Eggersten, 2020).

YG, who has spent the better part of the last two years speaking out against police brutality and the current president, took to the streets of Cali to protest and record the visual for his track "FTP." In July of this year, YG has planned a 4Hunnid Pop-Up Shop to occur in LA with the proceeds to benefit black owned businesses that have been affected during these impossible times.

This merely covers the amount of support shown for the Black Lives Matter movement. Diddy recently launched an extended platform from Revolt called Revolt Black News. Revolt Black News is Diddy's vision for a black news platform that is not tainted by biased media. Alicia Keys has also used her platform to speak out and The Carter's penned letters to legislative officials on behalf of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor. It truly takes a village to bring change and right now... it's all hands on deck.
