Back in March of this year when everyone was stocking up on food, toilet paper, and other supplies in preparation for quarantine, Nintendo made the ingenious idea of releasing a game that had been hyped up for Switch users for a good amount of time. On March 20th, 2020, Animal Crossing: New Horizons was released for the Switch and it couldn’t have come out at a better time. Everyone trapped inside their homes and nowhere to go, nothing to do but to sit down and build an island from the ground up. In the game, you can build, decorate, collect bugs and fossils, fish, stargaze, meet and chat with residents, craft, and build an island that is unique to you. And as of recently, you can use that island as a backdrop to a music video.
Sylvan Esso, an American electronic pop duo, revealed on their twitter that they had created a shot for shot recreation of their live-action music video for the song Ferris Wheel in the style of the game Animal Crossing. The music video for the song was a recreation of the artistic IRL version set in a carnival about discovering the power within someone and learning how to figure it out and wield it.
The music video was created entirely in the game with all its assets and completely recorded in-game on the Nintendo Switch. What is amazing about the music video is that it manages to capture the vibe of the IRL music video and incorporate it's own vibe and meaning into the game, and thanks to community creators, Sylvan Esso was able to get wardrobe assets that closely resemble the real-life creation.
Even though it's not a shot-for-shot recreation of the real music video, this version manages to set itself apart from reality and become something of its own through imagination and working with what you got.
In a game where you can decorate and create things in the image of your own, it’s only a matter of time before people begin to share the things, they created to one another. Word of mouth will play the usual role and amazing things can come into light as people recreate scenes from movies, videos, pictures, memes, and memories that other people can come and see via island codes
With the amount of content that Animal Crossing can give to a player, it’s no surprise that artists and content creators are taking advantage of this and making something unique to give to the community. This is not the first time that the game has been used to create music videos. Other songs such as Africa by Toto, Hypothetical by Sad Alex, Blinding Lights by The Weeknd, and even fan-made music videos are amongst the many.
Give creative people tools, and they will give you content. As long as Animal Crossing continues to warm the hearts of gamers across the world and inspire new ideas to come to fruition, then Nintendo has successfully delivered once again!
